The mariner tells the tale of how he was on a boat that got lost in fog and ice until the appearance of an albatross (a sea bird kind of like a seagull). The guest becomes increasingly uncomfortable but is unable to stop listening. The poem begins with the title character, the ancient mariner (an old sailor), cornering a wedding guest to tell him a story (like old sailors do). ![]() ![]() It has remained popular due in part to its strange, supernatural imagery and its many possible interpretations. The first explanation is simple and logical. The second is that Tomie has come back from the dead. One is that the new Tomie is an impostor. So according to them, there can be only two explanations. They are sure that the real Tomie is dead. But other classmates seem to know something that we, the readers, don’t. Everyone looks at the class entrance, and who do they find? It is Tomie! She’s alive and kicking and acts as if nothing has happened! Some classmates feel that the dead person must be a different person and it was a case of mistaken identity. So many of your books target people on the edge, or the disenfranchised-but to me, you make those people the ones who are NOT to be dismissed, the ones we NEED to know.
